How does Cipro work? What will it do for me?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that belongs to the family of medications known asquinolones. It is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. It is most commonly used to treat infections of the skin, sinuses, bone, lung, ear, abdomen, kidney, prostate, and bladder.

It can also be used to treat some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), some forms of infectious diarrhea, and typhoid fever.

The extended release form of ciprofloxacin is used to treat bladder and kidney infections.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use Cipro?

The recommended adult dose of ciprofloxacin tablets ranges from 250 mg to 750 mg twice daily. For STIs, the dose is given once as a single dose.

When ciprofloxacin is given by intravenous (into a vein) injection, the usual dose is 200 mg to 400 mg every 8 to 12 hours. The exact dose of ciprofloxacin depends on the condition being treated and other factors.

Ciprofloxacin tablets should be taken before or after meals.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking ciprofloxacin and avoid dairy products. Although ciprofloxacin can be taken with meals that include milk, you should not take ciprofloxacin with dairy products alone or with calcium-fortified products. Do not take antacids; supplements with calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron; or multivitamins 6 hours before or 2 hours after taking ciprofloxacin.

If you are taking the suspension form of this medication, use an oral syringe to measure each dose as it gives a more accurate measurement than household teaspoons.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Even if you start to feel better after the start of treatment, it's important to finish the entire amount that was prescribed. If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not administer a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

This medication is available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms listed here. The forms available for the specific brand you have searched are listed under "What form(s) does this medication come in?"

The drug is effective when administered oral and parenteral (bypassing the digestive tract). At intake, especially on an empty stomach, it is well absorbed. Peak concentrations in plasma observed after 1-2 hours after ingestion and 30 min after intravenous injection. The half-life (the time during which the body is derived from '/ 2 dose administered preparation) - about 4 hours Not bound to plasma proteins. Well into the organs and tissues, passes the blood-brain barrier (the barrier between blood and brain tissue). About 40% is excreted in the urine unchanged within 24 hours

Indications for use:
Indications for use are basically the same as for ofloxacin, pefloxacin and other fluoroquinolones (respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, the gastrointestinal tract, including infections caused by Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter and other pathogens , gonococcal infections, meningitis / inflammation of the meninges / postoperative infectious complications, sepsis / septicemia microbes from the source of purulent / and other inflammatory processes).

How to use:
Assign an adult inside ciprofloxacin for uncomplicated urinary tract infections by 0,125-0,5 g, 2 times a day with complicated urinary tract infections and infections of the respiratory tract - to 0.25-0.5 g, 2 times a day, in more severe cases - to 0.75 g 2 times a day (if not carried parenteral treatment). The course of treatment - usually 5-15 days.
In particularly serious infectious diseases and the inability to start taking the pills inside with intravenous administration, preferably in the form of short-term infusion (approximately 30 minutes). Dilution (in bottles) may be administered undiluted or diluted in isotonic sodium chloride solution or 5% glucose solution. Concentrate infusion solution (capsules in 10 ml of 1% solution) should be diluted prior to administration.
